Liguria’s mild climate – a winter place of refuge for the Russian Aristocracy
Some 60 days of rain per year and mild temperatures all through the winter – it comes as no surprise that the Russian aristocracy followed the Grand Duchesse Maria Alexandrowa who resided on the Riviera in the mid last century. The mild climate is the result of a unique geographical situation as the Riviera of flowers is protected from wind to the north and east by high mountain ranges.
The long stretched valleys allow for the mild and pleasant Mediterrannean climate to flourish. The weather is actually better than in the neighbouring regions Piemont, Emilia-Romagna and Toscana. The nearest climate zone of similar qualities in Italy can only be found some hundreds of kilometers further south in the gulf of Naples. Temperatures on the coast rarely sink below freezing and the winter months are usually very sunny. And during the summer, it does not feel as sweltering as further land inwards.
